I love "to do" lists. There is something so fulfilling about checking off a box and going on to the next thing on the list. It's very much the same for my students when they checked their schedule, but if they physically can't write, this can be a challenge.
My classroom is an amazing place filled with hard working students and staff.
Each child has an individual education plan to help them make progress on goals in academics, social skills, communication and functional life skills. They are full of curiosity, energy and incredible potential. We focus on the positive and celebrate every success that our students achieve. Each and every day we do our best to make sure that our students have the necessary tools they need to succeed, but it's not easy when you have a classroom budget of $200 per year. With the help of Donors Choose, I am able to provide unique and engaging materials to help my students who experience autism and other communication disorders overcome their challenges and let their abilities shine through.
My Project
Every year I get one or two students who have more than the ordinary fine motor challenges that most students with autism experience. This year is no exception. One student in particular is unable at this time to check off the box on his schedule. I've tried a variety of alternative methods to give him a schedule that he can use but there's always something that makes it a challenge. We've tried schedules that allow him to take the picture off the schedule and put it in the "finished" box but it's hard to keep track of all the pictures. We are now using a iPad app that allows him to touch the picture and "check off" his schedule. The app is great but the iPad is a little too big for this little guy to carry around with him all day, but the iPad mini is the perfect size. The goal of this project is to allow my student to become more independent and not have to depend on teachers to help him access his schedule.
This is not your average iPad project, but a project whose only goal is to foster independence throughout the school day for an amazing student.
There won't be game apps or videos on this device. The purpose of this project is to allow us to provide a quick, easy and efficient way for a student to access his schedule.
