Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in New Mexico in a small and rural community. As the school counselor, I serve our approximately 520 students whose grades range from Pre-K to sixth grade. Most of the students and families I serve come from low-income households. In fact, our school is a Title I school, and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. As in most cases, I see a lot of issues in my students and their families that are usually correlated with poverty such as single-parent households, drug-related issues, immigration issues, abuse, and family instability.
However, in response to these unique challenging circumstances, my students are strong, resilient, loving, fighting, and determined individuals who manage to try their best in everything they do.
As my school's counselor, my main priority is to equip my students with the social and emotional skills they need to face any hardship, along with providing the educational resources they need so they can focus on learning.
My Project
The iPad Air and it's accessories will serve many purposes for my students. The first goal of these items will be to help complete career and interest aptitude tests for my students. Our district recently introduced us to a career orientated program that we can use with our students. This program has aptitude and career tests, career information for all ages including elementary, and college/university information. This is a huge opportunity, especially since many of our students will be first generation college students. This IPAD will be able to assist in having students complete these surveys, introduce them more to college and careers. This will be especially true, with those students who are struggling to find a purpose in coming to school, finding motivation to come or continue with school, or who are having trouble establishing long term goals. The second purpose of the iPad Air will be to conduct online motivational surveys to students who are currently struggling with engagement, participation, and attendance in school. This year we have struggled a lot with students coming to school and being engaged, I believe all students have a motivation that can get them to complete assignments, be engaged, and come to school. This survey will assist in determining those motivations and hopefully increase engagement, attendance, and participation. Thirdly, this iPad will be used to create and use engaging SEL lessons, check ins, and activities with my students during counselor-student meetings.
