Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It is with great excitement that I write this! I am a first-year teacher, and I have the pleasure of teaching an outstanding group of flourishing minds in the greater Houston area. My students are eager to build their own connections, communities and have agency over their surroundings.
My Bobcats are inquisitive, enthusiastic and continual learners; but, most of all they are resilient!
One of the biggest challenges faced last year was Hurricane Harvey, many of them lost everything and still managed to have perfect attendance. As well as experiencing an extreme weather disaster, many of my students are transitioning to the English language and require extra care.
In closing, although my students are small, they are mighty. Their understandings of life and learning are out of this world! I would like to be able to provide them with the equitable education they deserve.
My Project
Have you ever been wrapped up in a good book, you just couldn't put it down? You were so invested, you hung on to every word like you were in the story, and when you read the last page... you had the slightest feeling of melancholy.
It's high time these kiddos learn that Facebook is not the only "book" out there, reading actual books can be just as enjoyable!
The graphic novels requested in my project are so engaging, age appropriate and relatable. They range from biographies to fictional survival stories. Each set already has a place in my classroom library.
With the sets my students will first of all learn that reading can be fun! They will also be able to learn and apply reading concepts learned throughout the year. This project will allow me the resources to help increase reading ability.
