My Students

We have wonderful students in our School Library every day at our Title I, inner-city school. Our 850 students are culturally, ethnically, and economically diverse. Just this year in our library we started a book club to get more students into the library and reading. The book club has created a lot of enthusiasm from the students and teachers.

It is clear that book clubs promote a love for literature and a positive attitude toward reading.

I also believe that book clubs encourage extensive and intensive reading of a text. By meeting in a non-classroom environment, natural discussions occur among students and critical thinking takes place.

My Project

As our book club kicked off this year, we allowed the students to select the books they would like to read. "A Night Divided," by Jennifer Nielsen was clearly a top pick for most.

When I asked the students if they would like to meet the author and discuss the book with her, they couldn't believe it was a possibility.

Jennifer Nielsen is willing to come to our school when our group meets to discuss her book. She is also willing to include other classes for her presentation so we will be able to involve as many as 140 students.
