Covid-19 has continued to hurt the community and as a teacher, I see the affect it has had on children every day. It has been two long years since the pandemic started and it is apparent it will continue to rear its ugly head. We need to help students fill in the gaps they have before it widens and can’t be undone. In the classroom, when students in the past had reading levels of 4.0 – 12.0, I am seeing more and more 2.0 – 6.0 levels, with little to no growth as the year goes by.
Recently, I have taken a structured literacy class that has helped open my eyes a little more to see the individual struggles within my classroom.
One student is working diligently to learn the English language, others cannot understand tier two vocabulary words, and still, others need help with phonics and sounding out letters and words.
This grant will help my students learn those tier two words and improve their comprehension of what they are reading. I am requesting several small sets of different level books that will be used in literature circles. Temporary groups will be together by interest (the book) and choice, will read independently, will meet on a regular schedule, and will be evaluated by the teacher. Not only will the group discussions help with comprehension, but the students will start to think critically, they will discuss unknown words, and they will fill out daily reading logs to show understanding.
The teacher resources and games focus on vocabulary and spelling, a focus these students really need. The last item, the Qball, is to be used in the class to help with low talkers, students wearing masks, or the hearing impaired. One student and I are partially deaf.
