Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students choose our school because of our three pillars that support every decision that is made regarding our electives, student activities, and service opportunities. The pillars of creativity, sustainability, and responsibility have shaped several student-led ventures both on and off campus over the years.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the way we normally engage with our community and has all but changed the types of projects and the way we tackle them to address issues our students care the most about.

This shift in thinking has brought us back to basics and back to our campus since we opened this year. The neglect of our outdoor learning labs during the shutdown is visible and the students feel strongly about improving the appearance to highlight work that has been done (e.g. our gardens, our orchard, our chicken coop) and keep the momentum up to maintain the areas.

In the middle of our courtyard is a student-made statue of the Lorax, a quintessential symbol of sustainability. The authorization to construct this statue began with a letter-writing campaign to The Dr. Seuss Foundation after a critical analysis of the text and how its place on our campus is relevant. With the help of a local artist and several weekend workshops, students constructed the statue and painted it with 100% earth-based minerals to emphasize the symbolism of the Lorax. Fun fact: the core of the statue is made of 100% recyclable material the students gathered during a street clean-up!

The statue is in need of repair. He's been loved-on for several years by our littles and his colors have faded. The materials for this project will help students continue re-engaging with each other through a social and artistic project that ultimately will add more joy in learning.
