My students walk through the door every morning with a positive attitude, love for learning, and eagerness to begin a new day! I want them to know that they are capable of great things and that they can be anything they want to be. They are mathematicians, readers, authors, scientists, historians, and explorers. But in a noisy world, I want them to know that most of all, they are heard.
I work in a large school where the backgrounds, abilities, and needs of my students are extremely diverse.
Some of my students are living in poverty, while others are still learning English. Some are reading many levels above grade level, while others have behavior struggles. However, one thing rings true for all of my 22 students, they love learning and they want to be the very best version of themselves. My students set personal and academic goals for themselves and they work extremely hard every year to achieve their goals.
My Project
Every year I have students who struggle with reading fluently. It takes them a long time to get through a text and once they are done, they have forgotten everything that happened! It is a very frustrating task for them and they are starting to give up on being great readers. YOU can help them NOW! The reader's theater scripts that I have requested will be used daily during our Daily 5 literacy block. During this time, I meet with students in small groups to fine-tune their reading skills - especially fluency. Some are focusing on sight words, some are working on their comprehension, and most of my students are working on their fluency. The scripts will be placed at centers, too! My students will get to use these supplies during their independent work time. They will work on these improving their fluency during our whole literacy block.
The Common Core State Standards specifically say that 2nd graders need to read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
However, there is even a larger reason why these readers' theater scripts are needed by my students. They need to gain confidence in their reading abilities so they can love reading. Struggling with fluency should not scare my students away from books. Please help my students become confident, lifelong readers!
