My Students

How can our littlest learners build fluency as readers when they don't have examples of fluent readers to listen to?

My first grade students attend a public school in the East Bay.

This diverse group of students come from various backgrounds, but many of them qualify for free and reduced lunch, live in a home where no English is spoken, lack the resources and support needed to promote literacy in their homes, and are at risk for failing academically.

My Project

With these personal CD players my students will be able to listen to stories on their own. They won't be embarrassed to replay a track if they didn't understand it, or to listen to a certain story over and over. They will get to hear fluent readers reading with expression and proper intonation. These students will be able to point along as the High Frequency words that they are learning (over 130 this year!) are read to them with proper pronunciation. These struggling students are in need of intervention and can benefit tremendously from listening to fluent reading. They receive little or no support at home and with our growing class sizes, my time with each student is slowly decreasing. Students will be able to listen to our Open Court story of the week that they may have struggled to understand in a large group setting. They can listen to poems and short stories to improve their fluency. The possibilities are endless!
