Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach reading to 95 5th graders in a low/middle socioeconomic area. It is my mission to help kids be successful in reading.

Recent research has shown that fluency is essential to students becoming effective readers. In our classroom, we have daily practice where we read a short passage which I model for the students. We then discuss speed, accuracy and expression. The students take turns reading to each other and recording one another's mistakes. The students also grade one another using a rubric I've created and give each other feedback and constructive criticism. We repeat this process three times with each passage so they become more confident and successful each time.

While this has been effective for most of my students, some are still struggling. By using the tape recorders and tapes I have asked for, I will record the students so that they can assess themselves and track their own progress. If they can hear themselves, I feel this will be a powerful way to encourage them in their reading.

For my students who are extremely disfluent, I hope this will be a successful strategy for them. By funding this project, you will have a HUGE and LASTING impact on these very special kids.
