My students need a rug to sit on as we learn how to read, do math and science, as well as exercise. Most of our learning and practicing takes place on the carpet.

My Students

Our school in Richmond, CA is considered high poverty with a diverse student population.

The students in my class are a bright bunch, who are ready to kick off first grade with a new rug, and a mini refrigerator.

The students spend a good part of the school day on the carpet. They learn to read, work out math problems, exercise, as well as play on the carpet. We need a clean and comfortable place to do all of this.

My Project

We will use the carpet for most of our classroom lessons. The students can spread out their math supplies as they learn how to add and subtract and understand place value. They also will sit on the carpet as they practice reading with their partner. I really like this rug because of the individual squares it has. Each child has their own square to sit in and this really helps with classroom management. We also will use the carpet for exercise time.

The refrigerator will help us keep food fresh that we have picked from our school garden.

I teach the students a lot about healthy nutrition and we try to eat something from our class garden daily. The kids love the process of caring for the garden, picking food and then preparing and eating it.
