My students are a group of energetic first graders who come to school each day eager to learn. They attend a high poverty, Title I school in rural Georgia. Over 85% of my children live in poverty. Our elementary school is a low-income, rural school that has children that are homeless.
Regardless of our socioeconomic status, these students are young, ambitious, and smart.
Despite their hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn as much as they can so they can be successful. I teach an amazing group of first graders who come to school each day with smiles on their faces.
My Project
I would like to send my students home with a variety of fiction and nonfiction books on their individual reading levels. I know the importance of literacy and quality reading materials in the home.
Most of my students do not have access to books, so sending home books will improve their reading skills.
They will be able to take the books home and read with their families. Reading with their families will benefit the children by engaging families as partners in their children's academic success.
The books will be on various reading levels so each student will get a book suited for him/her. As students read these books with their families, they will continue to grow as readers which will help them throughout the school year. They will increase their reading ability by having these high interest books readily available. Plus reading with their families will benefit the children by engaging families as partners in their children's academic success.
