Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Kids sometimes really do think that money grows on trees! They don't understand that the $20 they just earned could instantly vanish if they don't save, budget and spend wisely! With the materials requested my students will learn about the cost and value of things.
My students are all English Language Learners who attend a high poverty public school, where 70% of the students receive a free or reduced lunch.
Many of them come from single family homes. Some are separated from a parent or parents who are still in their home country. They have many needs and face many challenges. Yet I have provided them with a warm environment where they can feel free to take risks. Because of this, they love coming to school and work hard for me.
My Project
My 5th graders recently attended a trip sponsored by Capital One bank whose emphasis was financial literacy. The students had to go to different stations and apply for jobs and use "money" to buy things. It was a great real world experience. I want to continue the excitement of that day by adding a financial literacy center in my classroom. The center would help develop functional skills for real life such as using money skills to track earnings and expenses with the ATM Action game. Real world math problems will be solved when playing the Neighborhood Jobs Math game. The students will be able to create job flyers and schedules as well as develop skills with decimals using money. The book Save, Spend and Donate will help students understand about managing their allowance. Finally with the Galaxy tablet we can download many apps such as GoVenture Finance Me and Funny Money which will teach children how to count, budget and spend savings rationally.
Through games, reading and the use of technology my students will learn about real world finances.
What a fun way to learn about allowances, jobs and budgeting!!! Help us become financially literate!
