My students are an energetic group of Spanish-dominant and English-dominant students that spend half of the day learning in Spanish and half of the day learning in English.
Students come from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds!
We are in a school that has two different learning strands: Dual Language Immersion and English only instruction. We serve a very diverse population with over sixty percent of students living in poverty; almost all of the students in my class make up part of that sixty percent. We are also unique in that minority cultures make up the majority of our school population.
My Project
Our wonderful 5th graders have been isolated and quarantined for 18 months and they need to play. These materials will be used prior to starting our learning for the day. They will also be used to provide brain breaks and screen free fun throughout our school day. If we do have to pivot to virtual learning, they can easily be sent home to allow students to still play and fidget at home. LEGOs and playdough will serve a dual purpose of fun independent activities as well as allow us to have a more hands on math and science class! All students must have their own materials this year and funding this project will ensure that all students to get learn and play throughout the day!
