For students in the modern classroom, seeing is believing. Over 60% of my highly diverse 5th grade students are designated as coming from homes of poverty. Yet, with the help of technology in the classroom, and focused teaching strategies, they are performing at or above the state's expectations for math.
Many of my students do not have computers at home, but they have all learned to pay attention to a video screen from an early age. As a teacher, I can use that preference for learning to my advantage, especially when teaching difficult concepts in math or science. Using a document camera and projector, I can demonstrate volume, geometric nets, surface area, and take them through the human body or solar system with some of the wonderful books I have purchased. Unfortunately, my 30+ students can't all see the one example that I have available.
While I have the projector, and many of the books, we need a document camera. This teaching tool will allow me to deliver a science demonstration to the whole class. It will allow me to model writing, explore math concepts in geometry and statistics, and have them share their discoveries, while using a medium that grabs their attention.
Educating ALL of our children is not a dream. It is happening, but only because of people like you in our community. You make the impossible challenge of shrinking budgets, nonexistent home resources, and diverse backgrounds surmountable. Your donations help me promote talented, qualified, and motivated students into our middle schools.
