Do you know what's it like to not be able to show a class full of students a game, activity sheet, manipulatives, artifacts, or anything that is small and difficult to show on a vertical surface? It is impossible to show detail and get the most out of the learning experience.
We are a brand new school in the Memphis Metropolitan area and we basically are starting from scratch when it comes to the amount of technology that is available to us and our students.
We are a diverse school with multiple learning modalities represented. Having the doc cam will be an important tool for helping those learners who are visual learners and who would have difficulty if we did not have a visual representations of our activities. Our class is called the "Cool Cats" and this year we are on a learning safari. Safari is an expedition to observe and learn and the doc cam will be an excellent tool for helping my first grade explorers. Many of my "explorers" need assistance with focus and attention so having this technology will be a novel way to zoom in their attention to our activities.
My Project
I've called my project the "Eye of the Tiger" Doc Cam because I feel it's going to help us magnify our learning experiences and help our students keep their "Cool Cat" eyes on the learning. The Doc Cam projects materials onto a large screen. It can be used by not only the teacher but also the students by further engaging them in their learning process. Teachers can display reading passages, activity sheets, manipulatives, games, writing samples, directions, etc. Students can be more actively engaged in their learning by being able to model and practice their learning using the doc cam. I have observed at a school that uses doc cams and was truly inspired by their utilization. The students were actively involved and motivated as they and their teacher used the doc cam throughout their lessons.
We live in an advanced, technological society.
Our students need to be prepared to use all the technology that can be made available to them in order to help them be more successful. This is a tool that can be used by ALL learners and used for years to come. Everyday...all day...I have samples, activities, games, manipulatives, writing samples, etc. that I would love to be able to share with all my students at the same time. The doc cam can do this and help meet the needs of all learners. Yes!
