Imagine being 5 years old and placed in a classroom where you can't understand the sounds the teacher is uttering or the word characters on the wall. You are only able to rely on the visuals surrounding you to give you clues on the current lesson.
My kindergarten students face this challenge every day.
They are placed in a Mandarin Immersion classroom where the vast majority of their day is spent in Mandarin, though more than two thirds of them are not native Mandarin speakers. While the goal of our program is to produce students that are completely fluent and proficient in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in both Mandarin and English, they definitely do not begin their kindergarten year this way. Many of my kindergartners aren't able to understand that while they are struggling to learn this second, third, or even fourth language of Mandarin now, they will appreciate this skill in their globalizing future.
My Project
As there is no comprehensive Mandarin curriculum available, all of our lessons are teacher created. Having a color printer in our classroom will allow me to create more enticing visuals that will help motivate our little learners to engage in lessons. With colorful visuals, the children will be more likely to be interested in comprehending lessons with less pain and struggle.
