I am the librarian of a school with grades K-5. We recently moved from a small classroom that was used as our library, into a new, very beautiful facility. However, we still have the old, worn out books and materials that we have had for 20-30 years. We would like to purchase literacy kits and teacher resources to bring literature to life for our students. We previously had no space to house these kinds of materials.
We are a Title I school with 492 students. Approximately 46% of them are on free lunch. We have several students who lost their homes in Hurricane Katrina. We also have classes with autistic and severe/profound disabilities that use our library. I have found, as librarian, that puppets and story characters are very appealing to the students. It is a much more affective way to reach them during story time. Of course our K-2 graders also love these stories and characters.
If funded, I will purchase literacy kits to enhance Science, Social Studies, Math, and Reading. I will also buy clear Hang-up bags so that teachers can easily view the contents of the kits.
Over 492 students will benefit from this project along with their teachers. They are not consumable, so will be used by teachers and students for many schools years to come.
