This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This year I had the privilege of being one of the founding teachers of a brand new inquiry based school. My students come from a wide range of backgrounds and their differences are what shape not only our classroom but also our growing school culture.
My students and I are focused on learning about the world around us through hands on, inquiry based experiences.
It is their observations and questions about the world that shape our learning throughout the year. I believe that by welcoming students' ideas, beliefs, questions, and thoughts into the classroom I am creating an environment where they are actively engaged in their education.
My Project
I currently teach at an inquiry based school where students' questions and ideas are at the center of our instruction. Last year, students were interested in learning about outer space and animals. As an inquiry based school we believe that learning does not take place only in the classroom. There are multiple areas in the school that we refer to as "learning labs". These learning labs are areas of the school where students can continue to work on skills that they are working on in the classrooms. Additionally, these areas allow for students to work in small groups, receive individualized instruction, and interact with their peers.
These requested materials will give the learning labs a themed makeover that will help them continue to inquire about the world around them.
One area will become a space area and will allow for the students to learn about the solar system. The other area will be a forest themed area and students will focus on the importance of respecting nature and wildlife. The materials in this project are materials that will redecorate the areas, help students to learn about forest animals and space, and give students the space needed to continue to grow.
