Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students and families speak Spanish, Mam, Tongan, Arabic, Tagalog, Karen, Karenni, Nepali and Chinese. Since 45% of our students are English Language Learners, we have a rich academic program to meet their language needs. Our newcomer program serves up to forty students in our community who have moved here in the last year and speak little English. We also have a rich African American student population that thrives at our school.
Our students reflect the neighborhood's diverse immigrant and minority populations.
Throughout the year, we have cultural celebrations to celebrate the histories, cultures, and accomplishments of our diverse student population. While 9 out of 10 of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, we are rich in so many ways.
My Project
Have you ever seen a show where they makeover someone's house? The feeling of absolute joy on that person's face when they see their new home is a favorite of mine - and I want to do that for my students!
Right now, the views of classrooms across the country aren't always the greatest - broken furniture, holes in the walls, and paint on the wall that is peeling.
I feel that I give my students a pretty nice space to work in, but I want to do more. I want to give them a grown-up classroom of their dreams! This classroom will house many flexible seating options: two round tables, a high table for standing or sitting, long tables with benches and chairs, stand alone chairs and two rugs with lots of pillows and cushions to work on the floor areas.
Not only do I want to renovate the classroom, but I also want to have them help! At the end of the year, the idea is to have students participate in a short design course. The would design a classroom space, then renovate this classroom, then write about the whole thing!
There are four parts to this project - I know that seems like a lot. But I figured if we were going to do it, we should do it right. Go big or go home, yes?
