Believe it or not, it’s common for kids (tweens and teens) to start becoming less concerned about their personal hygiene when they reach middle and high school. In some cases, young adults can also become lazy with their hygiene, which is part of the reason life skills programs have become very popular in schools today. Poor hygiene in teens can not only cause medical concerns such as developing acne, infections or rashes, but can also contributed to being a victim of bullying by becoming known at school (or in the neighborhood) as the kid with bad hygiene. Especially with preteens and teenagers, it can be very damaging to their self-esteem. As a high school counselor, teaching students to have high self-esteem is a vital part of their growing phase. When a student hygiene is not on point, chronic absenteeism occurs because they are ashamed or embarrassed to attend school. Sometimes, my students are faced with not having the personal items they need at home. I feel that if I'm able to provide care packages for them to take home or have those needed personal items for them at school, I can help contribute to increasing their self esteem, attendance, and personal awareness of healthy hygiene.
