My students live in a poor, rural community. They vary widely in their abilities, behaviors, and life experiences. The common element my kids do share, is their strong connection to our warm, tight knit, and nurturing elementary school. I strive to create a classroom environment that is both warm and caring.
The development of fifth grade student organizational skills are imperative to students making a smooth transition to middle school next year.
I believe in fostering student independence in daily routines and instruction. My students are empowered to take charge of their learning through individual goal-setting. They take great pride in their accomplishments and growth.
My Project
My fifth grade students are avid readers, It seems as if a whole new world opens up to them with each completed book. The problem is, I do not have enough higher level fiction books to keep up with their need!
The books in my classroom are too simple for my students or simply falling apart!
They deserve to have a classroom library that stimulates their imagination and encourages them to read. Fifth graders are no longer "learning to read" but reading to learn. They need to have literature at their fingertips that keeps challenging them. Please help me help them!
