Help me give my students access to literacy materials! I am requesting 3 dozen new social-emotional learning picture books for our library and guided reading resources to improve instruction.
I am so lucky to be the teacher for 7 AMAZING students this year. I teach Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities in a special education school. Our program is brand new and growing so quickly! We currently serve students K-7 and have grown from 1 to 7 students in less than 8 months.
Almost all of my students have been alive less than 10 years and have endured more than most adults I've ever met.
They are bright, triumphant, creative and hilarious. They've experienced trauma and adversity - but they are also beginning to experience support, consistency, success and confidence like they have never felt before.
More than 80% of the students in our program receive free or reduced price lunches. My students spend anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes on the bus to school each day to arrive at our out of district placement. It's my hope that by the time they get to us, our classroom is a safe, cheerful, comforting space for them to learn, grow, love and be loved.
My Project
Less than a year ago, I entered a classroom with less than 20 books on the shelves. Largely through generous donations and used book purchases we have built a small classroom library. Unfortunately, we are still lacking in books related to social-emotional learning topics. With many of my students having limited access to a large variety of books at home, I feel particularly burdened to provide access to these materials at school.
Literacy is critical for all students but for students who struggle with expressing themselves and regulating their emotions, the language, communication and discussion opportunities created by reading books is immeasurable.
Through expanding our social-emotional book library, we will be able to increase both our literacy skills and our ability to empathize with characters and others in our world.
The characters in the stories we will read have been bullied, been left out, felt different, overcome trials and persevered - just like many of my students. The opportunity for my students to see themselves in characters in the story is second to none. Between an expanded classroom library and the guided reading materials necessary to teach critical reading skills, my students will soar to higher reading levels, better regulate their emotions and continue to chase their goals.
