Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students need to be engaged in learning. We as teachers need to grab their attention and make learning fun. High interest non-fiction text does just that! Scholastic News excites my kids because it is nonfiction and it relates to something they have some prior knowledge of. My students come from a diverse population. 90% of the students are English Language Learners. Our school qualifies for Title One funding. The poverty level is high so only 1/3 of my students' parents can afford to help with getting a subscription. We are working hard to create leaders in our school and therefore, leaders in the community. My students can improve their lives through the choices they make. When they learn about other students like them who have succeeded, they too can be successful
My Project
I remember having Scholastic News in my classrooms when I attended elementary school. I have seen the impact that it has made in students over the years. It covers a variety of topics and helps incorporate science and social studies during reading time. The kids get very excited about having their own magazine which makes them love it even more. They have an Online version with the subscription which lets the students see videos, maps and other forms of news. Reading informational texts is an important part of the Common Core Standards.
Reading is a fundamental skill that must be met.
Reading something current and engaging will help my students meet this requirement. Scholastic News is an amazing magazine that keeps students' interest high.
