Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
English Language Learners, Limited English Proficiency Students, Emergent Bilinguals, and Severely Interrupted Formal Education Students plus low-income, special needs, special education, and highly likely to drop out are just a few of the labels given to my students. To me, they are just my ESL students.
I teach three very diverse grades of English as a Second Language in the Bronx.
My ESL students range from arriving in the last week to native born. The labels I would give my students are daring, kind, creative, hard-working, and innovative. They are working hard to learn English and math and social studies and science- all at the same time. With the right tools, they could make the transition from ELL to just student faster.
My Project
My students enjoy a variety of articles, short stories, poems, and plays in their extra reading period but finding materials with colorful visuals, and at multiple lexiles, is difficult and not always printer friendly.
I got a free trial to Storyworks magazine and my students loved it!
The magazine is engaging and filled with readings that have my students asking questions and researching further. The magazine also offers articles in multiple lexiles (reading levels) which allows students at different levels to access the same information. A feature my ESL students really enjoy is how it features children from around the United States. These readings are windows into lives they didn't know existed outside the television.
