My 2nd graders are an extremely bright group of kids that have a love for learning. They have a passion for reading and often can't wait to see what new book we are going to be reading next. My students love to listen to stories, read individually, with a partner, and at home. I want to continue to foster this love of reading while providing them with quality texts that also teach valuable life lessons and skills.
My class has students of all different backgrounds and socio-economic statuses and yet still they come to school each day ready to be challenged and ready to learn.
Our read-aloud time is a time in which we are able to sit closely together, forget reality, dive into the characters and settings of a good book, and then have an open and honest discussion afterwards that often leads to some surprising discoveries and revelations! Both my students and I particularly love Morning Meeting time because we can combine a good story with our own personal experiences and even some times a good game and role-playing situation! These few minutes not doing actually curriculum makes a world of difference in the climate of our class.
My Project
I recently implemented Morning Meeting time with my 2nd grade class last year. The students absolutely love this team because they get to be heard and we work on learning those "soft skills" we don't otherwise have time for such as blurting out, growth mindset, and how to be a friend. These books provide great examples and pictures that allow students to really get a good idea of what we are talking about in an age appropriate way.
I have specifically chosen texts that I feel will benefit my students and help develop specific skills I feel that need help with at this age.
Many of the books focus on having a growth mindset. With all this pressure on students at such a young age to get good scores on tests, I have found that many of my students are perfectionists that do not know how to handle themselves when something is difficult or challenging at first. These books allow students to think and discuss how to react when faced with these challenging situations in an appropriate way.
