My fourth grade reading friends are interested in creating a reading program that invites second grade reading buddies to grab a book and read in an effort to foster a love for reading both at both school and home. Fourth graders plan to organize clear backpacks with books, reading materials, reading journals, pencils, and a stuffed animal.
Each Fourth grade reading friend will select a second grader to share a backpack with. Second grade buddies are encouraged to take the backpacks home to share with their family. Second grade friends are asked to draw pictures and/or write in their journal about the books they read. On Friday, the reading buddies meet for thirty minutes at the end of the day to discuss the books and share their journal entries.
This type of reading incentive program, run by students for students, truly emphasizes the importance of reading, writing, and sharing, as well as the importance of being a supportive member of your community schools.
