My students are full of potential that they are not using! The majority of my students are 10th graders, and they cannot tell me the last book that they read, let alone the last book they read that they enjoyed.
To push students to fulfill and reach their potential, I feel it is my job to fill in the gaps where they are falling short: reading and creating meaning in fiction.
I truly believe that by increasing my classroom library I can accomplish this. Students will have access to books in my classroom, daily, that they can borrow without fear of a library fee that they cannot pay. I plan to hold students accountable for finding a book that they can read independently through reading logs, book talks, and projects; therefore, I feel responsible for making sure my students are able to access these books without fear of being punished for not turning it in on time, or not being able to afford the fees that may develop or already developed.
My Project
The books that I have chosen include books that students have requested, as well as come additional copies of books my students have loved.
I constantly hear "reading is boring" and when I hear this I know that my students have not yet found the right book.
Using my knowledge of students' interests and books that have engaged students from my last project, I have picked out books to add to my personal classroom library for students to improve the chances of students finding something they enjoy reading.
Students will be completing independent reading projects using different mediums to express their understanding of their book, as well as show personal connections to the book and characters within it. They will write poetry, create art or pictures, make videos, or simply write about it.
