This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are fifth graders who attend a K-5 elementary school in the city. Our students face challenges that many can't imagine, but they don't allow their circumstances to define them and neither do I! My reading classes are full of students from various backgrounds including many who are learning English as a second language. I love how they come in each day sharing a part of their world with me. Sometimes we're discussing their weekend activities, other times it's what they want to do to change the world. One thing I know for sure is that reading is an integral part of our classroom. My students love just having time to relax and dive deep into the pages of a good book. There's nothing better than that! Don't you agree? I love working with this group of students and helping them to become just as excited and curious about reading as I am!
All of my students are champions who are capable of excelling at whatever they set their minds to!
My Project
I'm always building our class library for my students! According to Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, books can serve as windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors . They are mirrors to those who are able to see their story with each turn of a page. You connect on a deeper level with the characters and begin to find your place in the world. Books are also windows which allow others to see a world view different from their own. Sliding glass doors refers to how books allow us to enter a world that is not our own.
Transformations take place when students see themselves in the books they read.
My students deserve to have a classroom library that has a collection of diverse and high interest books that help develop life long readers. I am requesting many picture books, chapter books with diverse characters and books that are currently of high interest to many 5th graders.
These books will be read for at least 15 minutes daily during our quiet reading time. With a minimum of 2,700 minutes of reading during our 180 day school year, these students are destined to be readers who are leaders! Through these books I hope to improve student interactions between each other and create a caring community of students.
