My Students
No matter what great things you accomplish, somebody helps you. -Wilma Rudolph.
My students have the cards stacked against them: they are minorities, girls, from the South Bronx.
Some also get the labels of English Language Learners or Special Needs. Almost all of them receive free or reduced-price lunch.
I like to label them differently: bright, creative, resilient, funny, kind, confident, responsible, and the list goes on. They are poised to accomplish greatness. Can you be the 'somebody' that helps?
My Project
Do you know what kids love just as much as stories? FACTS! College and career readiness standards dictate that students should be exposed to high quality nonfiction texts. Since all my kids are going to graduate from college, I need to prepare them now! You might remember getting Scholastic News when you were in school. They are fun. They are timely.
The engaging photos, charts, graphs and other text features entice young scholars into learning how to navigate informational texts.
And what is best, each student will get her very own copy to take home and share with her family!
