I teach in a rural public school, which has a low income based population. 100% of our students participate in a free breakfast and lunch program. Over 80% are second language learners.
The majority of our parents earn below the poverty level, which greatly diminishes their children's opportunities for building important background knowledge, and it limits their exposure to valuable experiences.
The students at my school have a love for learning, especially in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education.
Help our second grade students see and explore through Scholastic News. These news articles are high-interest that will draw each student into a world beyond the classroom walls. They include articles on (STEM) science, technology, engineering, and math as well as current events. Each student of 100 second graders will get a news magazine in their hot, little hands each week. This will help to foster a love of reading, and make connections between the real world and their lives. The learning doesn't stop there because they will each get to take their magazine home each week to share with their families.
