This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
At the core of who they are, my students are curious and kind. They look forward to losing their teeth, crossing the monkey bars at recess, and learning how to read. And that is exactly what their time in first grade should entail!
Our district-wide goal is to have all students reading at grade level by third grade.
Despite the wide range of abilities that exist within our classroom, this goal comes as both a challenge and a motivator!
Our school is located in the heart of Illinois and our enrollment is made up of 94% low-income families. I have several students who exhibit behaviors that simply hinder their ability to focus and sit still in class. Their bodies are in constant motion and engaging with a task for any extended amount of time requires extreme concentration. My students could greatly benefit from materials that allow them to work while using up excess energy, and activities that are engaging and purposeful!
My students are the next generation of doctors, writers, CEOs, teachers, managers, and parents; and, I want them to be prepared. I want them to be able to focus, engage, and be successful in all that they do!
My Project
My students will be able to experience hands-on learning with these materials. They will have a chance to move blocks, tiles, and letters with the hope that sounds and words are committed more thoroughly to memory. These materials will excite my first graders and greatly supplement our core literacy curriculum! I will use these materials during Guided Reading and Writer’s Workshop as I work with smaller groups of students in a more individualized time of instruction. My students will also have the opportunity to develop their social skills as they play the literacy games and cooperation skills as they read alongside one another at the Listening Center.
