My students need Scholastic News to learn about the world around them. Many of my students lack exposure to current events and would be amazed to see other children all around the world doing awesome things.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in an inner city school, my students face many challenges in and out of the classroom. My goal as an educator is to give my students a safe, fun environment where they will thrive as learners. I have a high population of English Language Learners in my classroom and all of my students live at or below the poverty line. Everyday with my students is a new adventure, they often teach me as much as I do them.
My Project
Reading Scholastic News will allow my students to see children from all over the world doing great things that are relevant to today's current events. Inner city students often only know their environment with very little exposure to the enormous world around them. Scholastic News provides current events that are of high interest to children and would open the eyes of my students to all the possibilities out there for them.
Reading is a huge part of our daily schedule and having Scholastic News for my students would allow for a great way to work in some extra science and social studies.
Reflection and writing will also be a part of having Scholastic News in my classroom.
