My Students

My fifth grade classroom is the last stop on the way to middle school. My students spend the year cementing what they've learned in elementary school and developing these skills further so they are ready for the big jump.

I work in a large, neighborhood school that is very diverse.

My students (and I believe all students) crave challenging, engaging, hands-on activities. I am committed to making each moment of our day meet their needs through integrated, targeted activities that develop a love of learning.

My Project

We can all agree that we want a nation of youth that are civically engaged. This begins by making students aware of current events. It can be challenging, however, to find age-appropriate materials that share some of the biggest stories of the day.

A current events newspaper will increase independent reading time for my students but also inform them about the biggest discoveries, successes, and challenges of the day.

Each of my students will regularly receive an issue to read and take home. These newspapers will also help to balance my literacy program that encourages reading a wide variety of material.
