I am a middle school teacher in a low-income district. My students are a spirited bunch, some of whom may not have the resources to explore some of the things we try to expose them to at school. They come twice a week, voluntarily, for after school tutoring, for areas in which they struggle. In an effort to provide them with something outside the traditional realm of education, I created a newsletter committee. These students give up their free time after school once a week to create a school newsletter for their fellow classmates. This school newsletter is allowing students to enhance their writing skills, as well as explore their investigative and photographical skills. My students are always very excited about new events that take place, and they look forward to highlighting special occasions and achievements of their fellow classmates. The students earn required community service hours whenever they complete a newsletter. I am hoping to help them explore interests that could lead to their possible future careers. As long as they are willing to stay after school, I am happy to volunteer my free time to help them.
My Project
Once a week, I volunteer my time and meet with students after school to develop a newsletter. This serves as a community service for my students, because they volunteer their time to create a positive newsletter to share with their peers/classmates. The students are very interested and excited about creating newsletters for their classmates. However, a big aspect of spreading news, nowadays, is through photos. Students are constantly asking about taking wonderful pictures, during school events, but we need a quality camera to do this. Some of the events that we have at our school happen under very low lighting, so we have not been able to secure quality photographs. With this camera, I know that they will be able to capture wonderful moments and share these moments with all of their peers. Once we have all that we need, we would love to publish the newsletters online for easier access and reading!
