My students are in a urban community in SouthCentral Alaska. My class in particular has quite a bit of diversity in it with upwards of 7 cultures/ languages being spoken. The area my school services is primarily high-poverty and high-need. Our state has some of the worst statistics for domestic violence, sexual abuse, rape, depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, and suicide. Our students don't always have a safe place to be after school, and not having certain basic school supplies provided only adds to some of the inconsistency and stress.
Despite the isolation of our state and the hardships nearly every student has experienced on some level, my students are bright, kind, funny, and willing to learn.
They are resilient, flexible, and inspirational, and would be most grateful for supplies and aid. Thank you.
My Project
My school district is buzzing with activity-- teachers are anxiously preparing schools and classrooms across Anchorage for an eventual return to face-to-face learning. Now, more than ever, it is crucial that we do our best to limit movement within the school and touch-points within the classroom.
Eliminating the need to use our sole printer in the teacher workroom would enable us to limit our travel within the building in addition to allowing students to print projects, the teacher to print lesson resources, and more.
The ability to color-print and have art supplies on-hand would be a game-changer in brightening our classroom in an otherwise dark year.
