Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a low income neighborhood. I teach special education and despite some of the obstacles they face on a daily basis, they come to school ready to learn each day! My students are hardworking, polite and eager to become successful members of the community.
My classroom is a mix of 4 and 5 special education students.
Many of them are not only special education students but are ESOL students. Often times, there are not supplies to accommodate the diverse learning environment in the classroom.
My Project
These materials will make a difference in my students' learning because they are interesting to read and have topics that are of high interest to the students. Each article uses a popular topic to teach the students a new concept. The articles engage the students and require them to think about topics that they care about or are interested in.
My students struggle to read and all of them are below grade level.
Trying to find text for struggling 4th and 5th readers is very challenging because the text on their level are often geared towards younger grades. They often feel embarrassed reading these text and will refuse.
Subscriptions to Storyworks and SuperScience magazines will allow the students to access texts on their level without feeling embarrassed. The magazines are colorful, interesting and appealing to these struggling readers.
