My Students

My school is a Title I school and my students each year are overwhelmingly English Language Learners. The students range in ability, with some just beginning to learn the English language. What every child has in common though is a love of learning. I know every student would be so excited to know that each week they would receive a scholastic magazine that they can read and then keep. Scholastic News would introduce the students to so many nonfiction topics, including current events, written in a way that they could understand.

This magazine will encourage them to read and expose them to new and exciting topics.

My Project

Many of our students have limited exposure to world events. The Scholastic News magazine is like a weekly surprise. The students will receive a magazine that they can keep and read about issues at a level that they can understand. In addition, to being exposed to a cross curricula of subjects my students will be working on reading strategies, such as determining the main idea, summarizing, use of context clues and using text features. The questions throughout can also spark conversation. As a teacher I am always looking for ways to encourage reading and the magazine is a great motivator.
