Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are scholars, athletes, musicians, chess players, manga and anime fanatics, cheerleaders, artists, runners, and volunteers. They participate in all kinds of clubs and activities. They are funny, quirky, and curious. Some are learning English. Many are looking forward to college and careers. They take great pride in our school.
I try to create a welcoming environment for them filled with materials/resources that meet the needs of as many students as possible.
As a high school librarian I see avid readers, non-readers, and every type of reader in between. Wherever my students begin, my goal is to help them grow and expand as readers, writers, thinkers, and dreamers.
My school is a Title I school with students qualifying for free meals. Many of my students do not have a quiet, comfortable place to read at home. While most of my students can decode words on a page, many have not developed a love of, or passion, for reading. They have not found that special book, that "home run" book that changes the course of their reading lives.
My students like the coffee house vibe we are trying to create in our library; an atmosphere of joy and inquiry prevails.
My Project
"Miss! Is the new Thrasher here?" "Miss! Is the Prom Issue of Seventeen here yet?" Every month, students ask if their favorite magazine has arrived. From the most reluctant reader to the most avid reader, students love magazines, and magazines are a vital piece of the literacy puzzle. Voluminous reading of all kinds is the key to lifelong learning and continued growth in literacy. Thanks to Donors Choose, the students in our library have enjoyed a number of magazines for the past year. Now, it is time to renew. We would like to expand our collection with The Week and a few other titles.
My students do not have discretionary money for things like magazines and the school library subscriptions provide support that is both academic and social/emotional.
These subscriptions will give our students hours of reading pleasure, as well as increase their reading skills. English learners often find magazines less intimidating than books as they learn the language. Many students will be drawn into the library by these magazine subscriptions, and discover books, and databases, and many other worlds previously unknown. Reading is POWER!
