My students are young English Learners who are eager to learn and love books as most do not have many books in their homes. They are full of questions and want to know what things are called in English. My children love to learn with pictures and books. They also love hands-on projects and learning through creativity. These combined learning styles instill fun learning experiences for my students.
Our school is located in a farming community which employees many families of English Language Learners.
Many of my student's parents work in poultry or produce. Therefore, our school also has several migrant students. I am fortunate that I get to teach many of my students for 2 years instead of just one. This helps build a bond between the students and myself that goes way beyond just and teacher-student connection. They become "my kids" and we learn and succeed together.
As English Language Learners, my students need to be surrounded with books and pictures to enhance their understanding of the English language. I am fortunate to work in a school where we have many books to provide this instruction for my students. There is excitement about learning in our school.
My Project
The book shelf will be used to display relevant literature for easy access to my English Language Learners to increase their reading and vocabulary skills. It will also help instill a love of reading in my students. My current 15 year old rug lacks visual excitement and interest that my English Learners need to encourage their learning interest.
It is important for a English Language Learner to be introduced to a variety of books and print at an early age to increase their language.
Having a comfortable reading corner where children can be engaged with print is an essential component of the classroom.
