This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students live in a neighborhood in Arkansas that has a combination of low income and middle class families. The community values education and meeting the needs of the whole child. This year our school is excited to offer our students an extended recess. In total, my fifth grade students will receive 45 minutes of physical activity, compared to only 20 minutes in prior years. With this extra 25 minutes, I am looking forward to seeing many benefits during instruction time. These benefits could include an increase in their level of physical activity; improvements in their memory, attention, concentration, and focus; an increase in time on task; a reduction of disruptive behavior; and improvements in their social and emotional development.

My Project

These games will provide resources for my students to enjoy their 45 minutes of physical activity. This is so important for children since most of the school day is spent sitting at their desk. During their physical activity time, I would like my students to enjoy the outdoors with the sportime play pack. This play pack will allow them opportunities to run, play and be social with their friends.

However, if my students are unable to play outside, I would like for them to have a "plan B." That plan includes kit sets of some classic games.

These games will allow my students to unplug from technology through board games whenever they play indoors.

With these new recess resources, my students will be able to choose from a variety of games or equipment that will allow them to develop social skills and reap the benefits of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. They will also be able to choose activities that they will enjoy during their physical activity time whether it is indoors or outdoors.
