Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach and mentor middle school students in a school that is dedicated to personalized learning. My school is in its fifth year of operation. We currently only have grades seven through eleven but hope to one day have a fully built out and cohesive middle and high school. Currently, my determined and earnestly curious math students are doing their best to adjust and bring their spirit of inquiry to virtual school. In their math class, students strive to build mastery of mathematical content, a growth mindset, and executive functioning skills they'll need to succeed past middle school. In my mentor group, students work on developing the habits needed to self-direct their learning.
I teach students at a rising school of choice in northern California.
Students and families work with teachers to build a school that we can call our own. The students are as diverse as the community we serve, predominantly black and brown, about a fifth English learners, over half socioeconomically disadvantaged, and about 10 percent students with disabilities.
My Project
The materials and supplies will help me provide more feedback to students while also motivating them to achieve more. The extendable laptop monitor and its stand will help me monitor student work and engagement during synchronous instruction. It has been increasingly difficult to do so, with the constraint of one screen needing multiple windows open at the same time. The remaining supplies (cards, stickers, and stamps) will be used to mail my students notes of encouragement with stickers during these difficult times.
These will also be used as part of a larger PBIS system to encourage students to keep up their hard work.
The system will be co-created with students and will have small rewards that they will identify they are willing to work for.
