My students are deserving of an art education experience that is as authentic and exemplary as any school district. Majority of my students come from low-income households, where sometimes even having a meal is a luxury. My school provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner to our students, who many have very little to call their own at home. Despite the array of challenges facing them at home, most all come to school to find security, love, and an education.
Their tenacity to learn only inspires me more as an art educator to provide them with a classroom where they can explore new ideas, concepts, and materials.
What I love most about my students is their boundless creativity and dedication in and around the art room for their artwork. They do not realize the extent of the discrepancy in their art experience compared to other schools and programs when it comes to funding and expenditure. And even when the discussion is brought forth for funding the art room, their focus is always on solutions for providing fundraising for art materials.
Oil pastels are an enjoyable and alluring art medium for students to work with. Their texture and shape make them ideal for introducing students to new concepts to explore in their work. Oil pastels can be summarized as oil painting in a stick, without the mess and chemicals associated with typical oil painting. student grade oil pastels can also be water soluble
For our project will be using oil pastels to explore different ways color can be used to imply and infer moods and meanings in artwork.
Students will be creating their own expressive portraits on black construction paper and coloring them with oil pastels. Because oil pastels are good for more than just one project, these materials can be used for multiple art projects in the art room.
