This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work with special education students from the inner city. I generally have a classroom size from eleven to fourteen. The overall majority of these students are from low-income families. They don't share the privileges and opportunities of society that children from higher income families enjoy. A lot of their problems stem from having parents who are themselves limited because they didn't finished high school or had multiple children at a very young age. In spite of this, most of the students are very bright. My goal is to instill hope in them and make them appreciate the value of getting an education.
My Project
Sometimes, reading can be a challenge in my classroom. As we read different stories in class, I have my students use tactical expression in art to draw tangible learning connections. With your generous donation, the students will be able to explore various means of art to reach key reading comprehension targets. I am hopeful that they will be able to use the clay to mold figures or images of what they have read and pencils and paint to draw connecting imagery. Through art, stories can be retold and better comprehended. These exercises are great indicators of whether or not the students understand what they are reading. These art supplies will be very instrumental in helping me to monitor my students’ progress in reading. Thank you for your support.
