Our school serves about 900 diverse students. My students are part of our group receiving gifted services and includes about 280 students in grades six through eight. I teach about 130 of them. I have the unique opportunity to teach advanced math to sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students. I firmly believe good math skills will open up doors for my students to do anything they want in the future. My students enjoy learning and look forward to being exposed to new material. They are interested, hardworking, and always looking for new challenges.
My 8th grade students have been with me for 3 years and thankfully feel comfortable being themselves, no matter how they identify themselves (gender).
I noticed that many of my kids like to express themselves with drawings, sketch books, and colored pens and pencils. This project would allow me to gift my kids a sketchbook and some colored pens before they head out for the summer. I will not see them next year, but I want them to be able to express their feelings in constructive ways that will help them be themselves. I have several kids who identify as a different gender and I always want them to feel included in our diverse classroom. The journals and art materials will help my diverse kids express themselves in ways that make them feel safe and loved. My kids just want to be loved for who they are and they don't want to pretend to be something different. I really appreciate that about my 8th graders and how accepting they are of others is wonderful.
