Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a classroom of 20 energetic, curious fun-loving 3-4 year-old students who love to explore new things especially a new language. I teach students from a diverse racial background: Latino students(from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guatemala , Columbia), African American. Caucasian, and Asian students but one thing they all have in common is the desire to learn a new language.
When students enter my classroom, half of them only speak their native language which is Spanish.
The other half of students are monolingual and only speak English. Through music and movement, play and countless hours of bilingual read-alouds my students naturally learn a second language. They are not afraid or intimated by the language because we build a sense of community in my classroom in which we are a family and learn to trust and respect one another they feel comfortable to try new things.
What I enjoy best is seeing my students interact with one another and not allowing a language barrier to get in their way of having fun. As they first begin to learn the language, they use simple words to communicate as they continue to hear and learn the language they use 2-3 word phrases.
My Project
The canvas frames will be used by my students to create a self portrait of themselves. The larger frames will be used for free expression- they can choose what they want to paint. The black card stock will be used to display photographs of children at work.
I also plan to use the black card notes to help children create holiday cards for school staff and family.
My goal is to bring more Art into my classroom to allow children to express themselves when they can't do it verbally. A picture tells a story and that's what I want to capture.
