All children learn in different ways. They need a variety of materials to best express themselves. I teach the 5th grade in a diverse urban community. There are more than 13 languages spoken in our school. Differentiated instruction is the key to reaching all of my kids. Their academics range from special education to gifted.

Our children have shown that art is a powerful way for them to express themselves, and also to show what they have learned. I have been incorporating art in my classroom and I have found that not only do the children enjoy drawing, but for many of the kids it is the best way for them to demonstrate and articulate what they are learning. We are facing huge budget cuts, and our art budget has been completely cut.

Sketchbooks are a great way for the kids to display what they know or how they are feeling about a subject. They are also a wonderful material to practice and learn different art techniques. We will use the sketchbooks for everything from visually exploring mathematical concepts to learning how to draw a self-portrait.

Your help will enrich my students day to day learning experiences. The sketchbooks will be used on an on-going basis, and at the end of the year the kids will take them home. Their sketchbooks will be a visual documentation of all that they have learned and worked on during the year. Your generosity will enrich the learning experience for each and every student.
