My 3rd-grade students are amazing people! They are passionate, hard-working, and eager to learn. I am constantly surprised by the kindness I witness to those in need. And I am awed by both their thought-provoking questions and their desire to seek out answers.
Teaching in a low-income area, my students face many challenges.
Several have limited English speaking abilities and lack the resources at home to support their learning experiences. In addition, there is a range of abilities in each class, from special education to gifted students. But each and every day, students walk in excited to learn.
Multiple studies have shown that integrating arts in education increases motivation, academic achievement, and graduation rates. In addition, these studies show that involvement in the arts can decrease behavior incidents and even help rewire a traumatized brain. A mere glance at the news will show you that all these outcomes are where we fail in our current educational system. Yet, we have not turned to more funding for the arts.
These art supplies will provide access to the arts that my students would otherwise not have.
Students will be given the option to represent their work through multiple means and in creative ways. Art integration will create a safe place for them to process big emotions.
