Creators. Learners. Positive thinkers. Helpers. Friends. These were just a few of the fantastic words my students used to describe themselves. Every day I am astounded and humbled by the excitement, appreciation, and empathy my kids bring into our classroom.
School isn't just about learning how to read, write, or count for these children - it's an escape, a way to express themselves and to be heard.
Our school is located in a low-economic area and lost much needed Title I funds by 0.02% this year. Many of the students are English learners and some have already experience unimaginable hardships. Some of my kids might not always have much in terms of school supplies or books, but despite the wide range of backgrounds my students bring to our room, they all share the same eagerness to learn.
My students are becoming better readers and writers every day, but understanding and remembering all of the phonics and spelling patterns of the English language is hard! Long vowels, short vowels, digraphs, diphthongs...phonics is complicated and confusing to early readers and English language learners. The "Secret Stories" approach to phonics makes learning phonics easy and fun! Each phonics pattern has a thoughtfully written story to connect the spelling patterns and sounds and, most importantly, make it stick.
My students will have a blast learning phonics through the stories, movements, and music that are included in "Secret Stories." Multi-sensory learning is the best way to make learning engaging and long-lasting, especially for students who are learning English as their second language.
The phonic set comes with posters to display as a visual reminder for the phonics stories, a lesson book with extra tools, and a musical CD to get the kids moving. I am asking for a second set of the posters so I can always have one set up for reference and a second to keep within my students' reach and to use with small groups. With your help and "Secret Stories," my students will no longer be intimidated by phonics. They will become stronger and more confident readers and writers.
