Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have always been interested in reading but I primarily read fiction books. Although I do recall my family reading the newspaper when I was young, at that time, it just didn't seem to be very interesting. I am looking for a way to interest my students in current events, and I think I've found it!
I teach 6th grade students in a low income inner city neighborhood.
Our student population consists of mostly Hispanic and Black students. We have approximately 800 students most of them being on free or reduced lunch. As a result of our students living in an at risk neighborhood, they are not always provided with the same things that students in more affluent neighborhoods may have. Many students are very resilient and don't allow their situations to have a permanent impact on their lives while others struggle.
My Project
They come everyday with the expectation that I am going to teach them something new each day. As an educator, it is my responsibility to motivate students to learn while meeting them at their need. As a Reading/Language Arts teacher, I am charged with helping students to improve reading and language arts skills. This year, I will be exposing them to more nonfiction stories together with current events to help them to better prepare for their college education. I am requesting a subscription of Time for Kids and Weekly Reader to expose my students to more non fiction stories in a print rich and student friendly magazine. These magazines highlight current events as well as activities to help promote understanding of the texts. After being exposed to these texts, students will be able to perform better on state tests as well as improve their overall reading comprehension skills.
There is so much going on in the world outside of the realm of what my students experience.
Exposing them to the world through current events will expand their knowledge and better prepare them for the future. Incorporating reading along with these current events will not only expose them to non fiction stories but improve their understanding of the world around them. Time for Kid and Weekly Reader are excellent sources.
