My students need a class set of Scholastic magazines to take them beyond the walls of our classroom and to a literary place of recent world events, timely debates, and riveting short stories.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th grade critical readers are ready to take their reading experience to the next level. They want stories that stories that tell of a complex past, so that they can begin to consider an even brighter future. They want to know about our world but struggle in navigating accurate, relevant information to keep them informed and aware. It is with these resources that we can shape the future leaders of tomorrow.
I teach in a Title I, public school on the southwest side of Chicago where 97% of students receive free or reduced price lunch.
Many of my students also qualify for bilingual services, and are children of immigrant parents.
At Marquette, have a very fortunate situation of having 50% African-American/Black students and 50% Latinx. This provides us the opportunity to learn and grow from each others' complex and diverse ideas. They are the new norm at Marquette School of Excellence, and that regardless of complexity of life they continue to break down the educational boundaries placed in front of them. Many of them are performing "at" or "above" the standards placed on them according to our yearly state assessments.
My Project
Scholastic SCOPE magazine contains relevant topics ranging from non-fiction new stories to well know literary classics with a dramatic spin. SCOPE provides students with a range of types of texts to encourage them to become passionate readers without being constrained to one genre. It opens up their eyes and hearts to experiencing different forms of texts. SCOPE gives my students the chance to think deeply, support their inferences, and produce writing which has engaged them. My students love the relevancy of the texts, and learning something new that is relevant to their lives.
SCOPE is a path for students to become engaged, passionate, and aware readers.
The quality of our lessons utilizing SCOPE help to make my classroom the thought provoking, engaging environment teachers strive to create. SCOPE will make my students not only better readers and writers, but it will make them more educated citizens and members of our community.
